Share

ROME — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warned Friday that global shortages of food and spiraling prices threaten widespread destabilization and is urging immediate action to forestall a repeat of the 2007 and 2008 crisis that led to riots in dozens of countries around the developing world. Clinton told a meeting of the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization that urgent steps are needed to hold down costs and boost agricultural production as food prices continue to rise. Although the situation is not yet as dire as it was four years ago, she said the consequences of inaction would … Continue reading

By Marie Maitre and Gus Trompiz PARIS | Fri May 6, 2011 12:37pm EDT PARIS (Reuters) – This week’s commodities plunge has done little to dent concerns of continuing food price inflation, as grain prices held up better than most and fundamentals for the highly weather-sensitive sector are unchanged. Grain traders have had their eyes glued to weather forecasts rather than economic data, as heavy rainfall slows planting in the U.S. Corn Belt and a drought in parts of the United States and western Europe threaten wheat crops.Oil dived 10 percent on Thursday as weak U.S. and German data stoked worries … Continue reading

Visits to the doctor’s office make up the bulk of the medical costs, researchers estimate, amounting to at least $118 million. Food allergies among children have climbed 18 percent from 1997 to 2007, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Today, about four of every 100 Americans suffer from the exaggerated immune response, which can be triggered by peanuts, milk, eggs and other products. Using several databases, the researchers tallied up the cost of emergency … Continue reading

The History of Cheesecake

The History of Cheesecake Many people would agree that the best birthday cake is the cheesecake. There are others who cannot imagine a world where cheesecake is not created. Nothing compares to having a delicious dairy treat every once in a while – almost everyone loves a slice of cheesecake. Cheesecake and the Ancient Greek Many believe that cheesecake originated as a New York City delicacy somewhere around the 20th century. Surprisingly, Ancient Greeks have been creating cheesecake for thousands of years before any American even tried to put their hands – and mouth- on the delicious indulgence. There are … Continue reading

What to Eat When You Have Arthritis. Here at Bill and Sheila’s Cookbook, we both suffer from osteoarthritis. I have severe problems with my knees. Sheila suffers badly from arthritis in the fingers, wrist and shoulder joints. Medication helps, but there are always unpleasant side effects. What we both needed was a diet, which would help reduce the inflammation in our joints and consequently, reduce the pain associated with it. First however, we just need to recap what arthritis is. It comes in many forms. The commonest being osteoarthritis. A more severe condition is rheumatoid arthritis which actually destroys ligaments … Continue reading

The Wonders of Rice

The Wonders of Rice As a cereal grain, rice is the most important food for most of the world’s population.  It has the second-highest worldwide production, after maize (corn). Here in Spain where we live, there are two rice-growing regions. The traditional Valencia rice, the one used for paella, is a round, medium-short grain rice. It has a marvellous capacity for absorbing the flavours, with which it cooks – chicken, pork, olive oil, seafood, vegetables. You have to take care not to overcook it, though, so it does not become sticky. But Spain today has another developing rice-growing region, in … Continue reading

How to make the Perfect Yorkshire Pudding

How to make the Perfect Yorkshire Pudding What is a Yorkshire Pudding?  This is often the question put to me by my Spanish friends, and probably by our readers in other parts of the world.  A Yorkshire pudding is a batter pudding which was originally designed (by a Yorkshire Chef, naturally) to use up the hot fat and juices that came from the Sunday roast. The flavours obtained from the meat are soaked up by the pudding. In some parts of the North east of England, especially Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland, the pudding is served first – before the main course.  … Continue reading

What is a Haggis

What is a Haggis Being of Scottish Decent, we know all about the haggis.  Sheila is actually a descendant of Rob Roy, the famous Scottish Highlander (and thief!). Haggis is a traditional Scottish highland dish that resembles, in some senses, a rather rough sausage. It is the national dish of Scotland, and Robert Burns, the great Scots poet, who wrote the famous “Address to a Haggis” called the haggis the “chieftain o’ the puddin-race.” It is a staple of Scottish cuisine, and is served in the traditional manner, as well as in the “haggis supper” (deep fried haggis with a side of French fries) or … Continue reading
