Dickey’s Barbecue Becomes the Leader of Fast-Casual Barbecue

The Nation’s Fastest Growing Barbecue Chain Opens its 185th Location

DALLAS, Nov. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Watch out Famous Dave’s, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit has just hit 185 locations nationwide; becoming the leader of fast-casual barbecue.

Today, Dickey’s opened its 185th location in Miramar, Florida.

In 1941 Travis Dickey started up the restaurant north of downtown Dallas. He rented part of his store’s sign to Dr. Pepper in order to pay for the startup cost. His menu consisted of his own Texas barbecue recipes and everything he made had to be just right. Travis Dickey continued to run his business day in and day out for 26 years. In 1967, Dickey passed away while doing what he loved–preparing great barbecue.

Travis Dickey‘s sons, Roland Dickey Sr. and T.D. Dickey Jr. took over the restaurant and began their journey to expand their father’s restaurant throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In 1994, the company began franchising and within 11 years it had acquired 55 locations.

“We just kept increasing the amount of stores right up until the recession,” said Roland Dickey Sr.

During the economic downturn, Dickey’s took a closer look at their business model and made major adjustments. Since this restructuring, the chain has opened stores at an aggressive rate; breaking the barriers that come with any barbecue chain.

“The challenge is that great barbecue takes time and needs to be slowly smoked,” said Roland Dickey Jr., president of Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurants, Inc. “We take our time to make sure that our meats are smoked to perfection and that our customers are getting exactly what they would have gotten in 1941–great tasting Texas barbecue.”

Dickey’s Barbecue is only 15 stores away from its goal of 200 stores by the end of 2011.

“We have happily brought barbecue to people who are miles away from our Texas roots,” said Roland Dickey, Jr. “We plan on continuing our expansion and spreading the joy of great tasting barbecue.”

The Dickey’s Barbecue Experience

Barbecue

By Kyle Scot Martinez

Have a craving for authentic Texas-Style barbecue? Got a hankering for juicy ribs, beef brisket, hot spicy

sausage links and barbecue beans? Which barbecue sauce do you prefer—spicy, sweet, or middle-of-the-road?

All of these questions can be answered and satisfied at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Roseville.

The yellow Dickey’s sign has been known throughout the state of Texas since 1941, with the first Dickey’s Barbecue Pit opening in Dallas. As of today, it has multiple locations in 39 of the 50 US States. Celebrity luminaries like Elvis Presley and President Richard Nixon were have said to patronize the inaugural Dallas location when they were in town, because it was known for its authentic, tasty barbecue. In the 70 year history of Dickey’s, its fame for Texas-Style Barbecue has spread, and the restaurant began franchising in 1994. In fact, another location is due to open up soon in Rocklin. This location in Roseville has been serving customers for about 4 years now.

Upon entering Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Roseville, the patron is struck with nostalgia of black and white pictures taken from the first Dickey’s location of Dallas. Dickey’s has a homegrown feel like it welcomes you as one of its own family. You can almost place yourself in the black and white pictures with the founder, Travis Dickey. A picture of The Mayor of Dallas being served barbecue is seen over one of the restaurant’s booths.

The barbecue itself is robust, tangy, and tasty. I ate with my girlfriend and two sons. We ordered the ‘Family Plate” that serves 4-6 people. It offers a choice of two meats, three sides, and comes with rolls, sauce, pickles, and the fixin’s. The choice of meats includes chopped or sliced Beef Brisket, “Fall of the Bone” Pork Ribs, Southern Pulled Pork, Virginia Style Ham, Tender Turkey Breast, Marinated Turkey Breast, Spicy Cheddar Sausage, or Old Recipe Polish Sausage. As for the sides, Dickey’s offers Waffle Iron Fries, Creamy Coleslaw, Fried Onion Tanglers, Green Beans with Bacon, Potato Salad, Barbecue Beans, Jalapeno Beans, Fried Okra, Mac and Cheese, Baked Potato Casserole, or Chips. For our meat selection, we settled on the chopped Beef Brisket and the Fall of the Bone Pork Ribs. We picked our three sides which consisted of the Green Beans with Bacon, Waffle Iron Fries, and the Creamy Coleslaw. The three sauce choices compliment the barbecue quite well. We decided to try all three sauces that Dickey’s has to offer—original, sweet, and spicy. It is said on Dickey’s website that it took 3 years, 2 fist-fights, and 1 small kitchen before Travis Dickey perfected his signature tomato-based barbecue sauce. It does not disappoint.

If you are a carnivore with a carnivore’s appetite, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is a great place to eat. The food is great, the ambiance is very good, and the service is good. The menu may seem to be a little pricey at first, but for how much you get, it is worth it. As for location, the yellow Dickey’s sign can be seen from a busy street in Roseville and is well-accessible to people with a hankering for Texas-Style Barbecue.

I would recommend Dickey’s as a “Best Of” restaurant for barbecue in Sacramento. With a barbecue restaurant that has been around since 1941, served the likes of Elvis and Richard Nixon, and offers free ice cream at the end of your meal to boot, you can’t go wrong!
