People have no idea how many calories are in alcoholic drinks despite pledges to lose weight, research suggests.A poll of 2,000 Britons found fewer than one in three (29%) could say roughly how many calories are in a standard 175ml glass of wine (134).This is despite 40% knowing their recommended daily calorie intake and 42% knowing the approximate number of calories in a cheeseburger (337).The research, for industry funded charity Drinkaware, is to help launch a new online calculator, MyDrinkaware. Wine festival kicks off St. Ubaldo week in Jessup – Scranton Times

St. Ubaldo week got off to a rousing start Sunday in Jessup as several hundred people came out to Station Park to enjoy one of the first dry days in a while, while sampling wines.The 15th annual Wine Tasting had a decidedly Italian bent. People enjoyed sandwiches made from lonza – a dry-cured pork shoulder that some people still make in their home. The St. Ubaldo Society sold T-shirts, hats and flags commemorating the town trademark “Race of the Saints” event. Wine, beer festival brings hundreds to Michigan International Speedway

It was a day of clinking glasses and wine and cheese sampling Saturday at the annual Great Lakes Wine Fest at Michigan International Speedway. More than three dozen Michigan-based wineries and breweries, as well as local hospitality-themed businesses, were on hand to share their wares with the public. Those with an interest in raising their wine IQ a few points might consider dropping in on one or more tasting seminars offered by Ralph Hersom this summer at his artfully appointed and comfortable wine shop in Hingham.
The series consists of two-hour early evening events occurring weekly (or nearly so) during June and July with a focus on pairing wine with small dishes or cheeses.
