London Warehouse Heist Nets 400 Cases of ‘Rare’ Wine, Police Say
Share

Around 400 cases of wine, worth an estimated 1 million pounds ($1.63 million), were stolen from a warehouse in London and two men have been arrested so far, police said. “The stolen stock is rare and valuable,” Detective Constable Ash Rossiter said. “It may be the aim of those who have stolen it to try and sell it to private collectors or auction houses.” The men broke a padlock and disabled closed-caption television cameras to break into the facility, London’s Metropolitan Police said in an e-mailed statement today. The wine, some owned by private investors, was at a warehouse in the Bethnal … Continue reading
New Bill In Albany Would Allow State Supermarkets To Sell Wine
Share
Tweet
A bill was introduced in Albany yesterday that would allow New York grocery stores to sell wine, just as it’s sold in many other states, reports The Wall Street Journal. The bill, which has bipartisan support in both the Assembly and Senate, has already been met with stiff opposition from liquor store owners across the state who fear the measure could put them out of business. The state’s supermarkets claim the new wine sales would create thousands of jobs and stimulate the economy. From Crain’s Business New York: Supermarket owners said allowing them to sell wine would boost state tax … Continue reading

Wine, wellness, boomers — not the best mix

Recommend By Anya Martin, MarketWatch DECATUR, Ga. (MarketWatch) — As baby boomers approach their golden years, they are embracing wellness and wine — two things that don’t always go together. While a glass of red wine a day may reduce the risk of heart disease, many boomers are drinking a lot more and not realizing they are increasing their potential risks for other serious health problems, ranging from alcohol abuse disorders to chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, liver disease, pancreatitis and certain cancers, said Dr. Robert Huebner, acting director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism’s Division … Continue reading

Flanagan, 47, now operates TheWineGuyStore.com, an e-commerce wine concierge service. All of his time, every day, is spent immersed in wine — not payroll, inventory, marketing or employee management.“This is what I do all day long: I sit here, search the Internet, do research for people and find great deals,” he said. “I don’t have salesmen trying to sell me stuff I don’t want. I don’t have employees who need me to do this and that. I don’t have telesales and advertising people coming in all the time. I’m able to keep the main thing, the main thing.”Flanagan’s clients include … Continue reading

On the verge of a fine wine bill

Like a good wine, sometimes a piece of legislation improves with age. So it is with a proposal to sell wine in groceries stores and some other establishments in New York. It’s getting there. We’ve supported this idea in the past. It’s the right thing for consumers, whose choices shouldn’t be limited for the sake of preserving the virtual monopoly that liquor stores in this state have long enjoyed. It’s also the right thing for New York, which stands to gain an estimated $350 million in licensing fees, under the latest projections. Our endorsement of the idea, however, comes with a very … Continue reading

Vive le Fruit-Forward! New World Wine Celebrates the Judgment of Paris
Share
Tweet
A few years ago I was drinking wine here in Miami with a French friend whose family owns a winery in Burgundy. I poured him something from this hemisphere – it was either a California Cabernet or a Chilean Carménère – and from the look on his face I could tell he thought I was dispensing blood in his glass. Ditto when he tasted it: too heavy, fruit-forward, spicy, all the usual Old World criticisms of New World wine. “In France we prefer our wines to be more… subtle,” he sniffed. To which I replied, “Was it subtlety that saved … Continue reading
