FOCUS ON HEALTH – Nearly one in five U.S. young adults may have high blood pressure U.S. researchers report. These findings by a University of North Carolina team are in contrast to a federal government study suggestsing only four percent of young adults have high blood pressure. This study found of the more than 14,000 men and women studied 19 percent had elevated levels. HARRISBURG – It pays to pick up a bottle of rum or wine for that summer barbecue party while vacationing at the Jersey Shore. The perception in Pennsylvania is that other states have better prices on wine and liquor, so it makes sense to stock up when you’re out of state. Maryland stores near the Pennsylvania line say they get plenty of customers from the Keystone State. Could red wine help lessen the short- and long-term effects of concussions? Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center think resveratrol, a component in red wine and grapes, may help, and hope to test their theory on professional boxers. “We know from animal studies that if we give the drug immediately after or soon after a brain injury, it can dramatically and significantly reduce the damage you see long-term,” researcher Dr. Joshua Gatson said. “There haven’t been any completed human studies yet, so this is really the first look at resveratrol’s effect on traumatic brain injury.” Researchers plan … Continue reading
