Eat it raw
“Healthy food has gotten a bad rap for a long time, but people don’t want everything to taste like cardboard,” she said. Still, the transition can be difficult. People are addicted to high fat, processed foods and can experience physical and mental symptoms when they change their diet. But it’s only temporary, Brown said.
“As a culture we need to up our raw intake, or try eating vegetables lightly stir fried or steamed,” she said. “If you are having a cooked protein, like salmon, add some blueberry salsa and serve it with a side of slaw. Anything to up that raw intake.”
“One of the problems with the raw food diet is that people are turned off by trying to give everything up,” she said. “All-or-nothing is a recipe for disaster. Try making changes gradually, and if you succeed for a week or two then fail, it’s not the end of the world. Don’t beat yourself up, just get back on track.”
One way to switch your habits is to have a substitute for the things you crave so you can have a treat and stay on course.
“I made the most fabulous raw brownies today,” Brown said. “When I feel down, I have a raw brownie and I feel better. I don’t feel better for a moment then immediately feel worse because I just ate a Betty Crocker mix full of eggs and oil.”
The goal should be to take steps wherever you can and stick with it long enough to really feel the benefits, said Knight.
“If you’re 80 percent raw you are still benefitting what the raw food diet can do for you — even if you are dipping to 50 percent for one day,” Knight said. “What’s important is that you don’t have to push yourself to the extreme. Saying, ‘I’m going to do this 100 percent for a week’ leads a lot of people not to want to go through with it.”
“With your diet and raw food, you want to clean yourself up, get a little bit of mental clarity and enjoy the health benefits, “ Knight said. “If you go 100 percent and get stressed out about it, the less it’s going to benefit you.”
