FOOD SAFETY ALERT – Botulism warning issued

State heath officials are warning consumers not to eat two manufacturers’ packaged soups that were sold in the last year at Southern California farmers markets.

Organic Soup Kitchen Officials say soups from One Gun Ranch and Organic Soup Kitchen may contain botulism, a rare but serious illness caused by a bacteria.

In a statement, the California Department of Public Health said that no illnesses have been linked to any of the affected products, but warned that botulism can produce symptoms ranging from blurred vision to muscle paralysis.

One Gun Ranch produced about 40 jars of its soups and sold them May 13 and June 3 at the Pacific Palisades farmers market. Organic Soup Kitchen sold about 80 jars of soup each week seasonally between June 6, 2011, and May 6 of this year at the Calabasas and Studio City farmers markets.

“CDPH is working with both companies to ensure these products are no longer available for sale,” the statement said.

A department spokesman said the processes used to manufacture these soups had not been properly evaluated  by heath officials prior to the soups hitting the market. He said both firms voluntarily ceased operations after being contacted by health agencies.
