Diet starts tomorrow. Thanks, Michelle Obama.

“I just don’t like the first lady doing push-ups,” a broadcast conservative said. “Would Laura Bush do push-ups on TV? Can you imagine?”

No, I can’t. Mrs. Obama promotes the nation’s good health with the same singular and terrible ferocity with which she promotes her husband. That’s her deal. And Mrs. Bush liked to push reading and literacy with equal ferocity. Just leave the prime spouses be.

The last thing we need is to see first ladies fighting it out, say, in some First Ladies Ninja Warrior Competition, or First Ladies Huntress Contest, in camo shorts and muscle shirts. And what if Hillary Clinton finally becomes president someday? Bill becomes First Laddie, shows up  on “The View,” and asks the female hosts to work out with him. He’s no Michelle. Oh, the horror.

Most of the anti-Michelle push-up comments come from right of center, so I’m just going to walk to port side and stand with her. Not with her, exactly. She might expect me to exercise. But I will stand off to the side, a sedentary yet helpful wingman, hoping to cut out the carbs.

I’ll admit it here. Michelle has inspired me to go on a diet. Thanks, Michelle. It’s about time, because I can’t keep blaming the laundry for shrinking my shirts.

“You’re going on a diet? Great!” said a guy around here. “When?”

Tomorrow.

But back to Michelle. She’s doing the right thing. She’s promoting good health, and she’s a role model. Obesity is a critical issue for all Americans, especially for teenagers; and young women look up to her, particularly minority girls and moms.

Is her fierce workout persona and the buff arm business all about politics? Of course. She’s a politician. Modern first ladies put up with untold grief to get their guy into that alpha chair. They smile graciously even while cutting off your head with a butter knife.

Unfortunately, her crusade begins from the big-government political left. This has promoted the nanny state telling people what to eat or not eat. The latest stupid nanny-state idea comes from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his proposed ban on large servings of soda pop.

If Mrs. Obama really wanted to fight obesity, she’d target federal subsidies for corn and sugar. Processed flour and high-fructose corn syrup, subsidized by the billions each year, provide cheap calories for poor people. And these are the wrong calories.

Poor folks can’t afford filet and super white tuna sushi. But poor people can afford a loaf of white bread, or they supersize it with a big drink to fill themselves up. At bottom, Big Agriculture is behind Big Obesity in America.

But Democrats and Republicans won’t touch Big Agriculture. Sugar is Florida and grain is the entire Midwest, and Michelle wants her husband to win another term.

The Obamas have a personal chef named Kass to make healthy food. But I’ve got two chefs named Kass at my house, my wife, Betty, and Yia-Yia. So now that I’m Michelle’s wingman, I’ve enlisted my Kass chefs for some low-cost and healthy Greek village recipes. Each one feeds a family of five and costs between $4 and $8.

Betty’s Spanokorizo (Spinach and rice). One of my favorites. When Betty makes this, I love to drizzle fresh lemon juice on top.

Ingredients: 2 pounds fresh spinach, one 16-ounce can stewed tomatoes, 1 tablespoon tomato paste, 1 chopped onion, 1 tablespoon salt. Pepper to taste (cayenne pepper optional), 2 tablespoons fresh dill, 1/4 cup olive oil, 2 tablespoons butter, 1 tablespoon dried mint, 1 cup water, 1/2 cup long grain rice.

Directions: Saute onion in oil and butter over medium heat, add rice and spices, cook until rice is tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Add stewed tomatoes and tomato paste and spinach over low heat until fully cooked. Serve with a salad and fresh sesame bread.

Yia-Yia’s Lamb Neck Bones and Endive

Ingredients: 1/4 cup olive oil, 3 to 4 pounds lamb shoulder or neck bones cut into 1- to 2-inch pieces, 1 cup finely chopped onion, 3 cloves minced garlic, one 16-ounce can of stewed tomatoes (cut up including juice), 1/4 cup chopped parsley, salt and pepper to taste, 3 pounds endives or dandelion greens — washed, drained and cut up (similar to salad).

Directions: Add oil in pan, heat pan and add meat to brown on all sides. Remove meat, set aside. In the pan saute onions and garlic until soft (add garlic second to prevent burning). Add tomatoes, parsley, salt and pepper, then return meat to pan. Add enough water to cover meat. Cook on medium heat 40 to 50 minutes until tender. Then add greens, cover and simmer about 20 minutes until greens and meat are cooked completely.

John’s Got to Eat More Lentils These Days

Ingredients: 1 pound lentils, 1 cup chopped celery, 1 cup chopped carrots, 3 cups water, 1 large onion chopped, 2 cloves minced garlic, 1 bay leaf, 1 tablespoon oregano, 1/4 cup olive oil, 2 tablespoons tomato paste, 1/2 cup red wine vinegar, 1  teaspoon allspice, salt and pepper to taste.

Directions: Wash lentils, drain them, put oil in Dutch oven, heat the oil, add all ingredients, bring to a boil and simmer about 20 to 30 minutes. Add water or stock if making soup.

One more thing: Don’t pass me the bread. Thanks, Michelle.
