Eating whole fruits, veggies is better option than juicing
Q. What are the benefits of juicing fruits and vegetables?
A. According to Jennefer Nelson, R.Fl, L.D., from www.mayoclinic.com, juicing is not any healthier than eating whole fruits and vegetables.
There isn’t any scientific evidence that shows extracted juices are healthier than the juice you get by eating the fruit or vegetable by itself.
The liquid you get from juicing the fruits and vegetables has lots of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, but it lacks the healthy fiber that is only found in the whole fruit and vegetable.
Proponents say that juicing is better for you because it gives your digestive system a rest from working on the fiber and the body absorbs the vitamins and minerals quicker.
Some also say that juicing can reduce the risk of cancer, boost the immune system, help remove toxins, aid with digestion and help you lose weight.
If you decide to do this you must drink the juice fresh-squeezed because, unfortunately, a big batch made ahead of time can quickly produce harmful bacteria. Also, add some of the pulp to your juice because that is where the fiber is, which will help fill you up.
If you buy juices from the grocery store, buy a brand that has low sugar (no added sugar or artificial sweeteners) and is pasteurized. One website sells juicers claiming that juicing can “alleviate symptoms of depression, slow the onset of age illnesses and has anti-aging benefits for the skin.” I believe that if that is the only way you are going to consume your fruits and veggies and you want to take the time to extract the juices it will do you no harm.
But, I believe in consuming a fruit or vegetable in its natural state.
It’s easier, less messy and you aren’t wasting anything.
If you decide to juice your produce, wash it well, make small batches and add some of the pulp back in to the final product.
