Chocolate with everything

Students at Cleveland Elementary jumped into Reading Month taste buds first.

Pairs of students, flanked by teachers, stepped up to sample chocolate-covered Doritos, carrots, broccoli and even hot dogs in an assembly kicking off the school’s “One School, One Book” program.

All students at the school will get a copy of “Chocolate Fever” by Robert Kimmel Smith, which chronicles the adventures of a boy who eats chocolate with everything. Students will be reading it throughout the month.

“We wanted to think of a way to get them excited about the book,” said Principal Chris Collier, explaining the chocolate-covered vegetables. Collier also dressed up in an inflatable chef’s costume for the assembly.

All of the students were laughing and cheering as their peers sampled the unique combinations, excitedly volunteering for their own shot to taste-test something. Not all of them were excited once the morsels hit their mouth, however.

Chyna Wheatley, 11, was lucky enough to sample the chocolate-covered hot dog, but she would have been happier to miss out on the experience.

“It was gross,” she said.

Teachers and students alike wrinkled their noses at the chocolate coated hot dog, but reactions were mixed for the other treats. And even more crazy concoctions could be on the way.

Collier said teachers would be taking suggestions from the students throughout the month and repeating the experiment with some of the best ideas.

Those who already tested unconventional foods covered in chocolate have plenty of ideas for their classmates to sample. Among them: pizza, chicken, lasagna, steak and spaghetti.

Antonio Montgomery, 11, said his sampling of chocolate-covered foods wasn’t going to end with the hot dog he noshed on.

“I’m definitely going to try this at home,” he said.
