Onion sandwiches are not as ‘strange’ as one might think
However, her “strange” taste in sandwiches seems not to be quite as unique as I thought it was.
Retired Army Col. H. Lamar Hunt wrote: “DB has good taste in food. I love onion sandwiches with mayonnaise, like them even better with a slice of tomato. For breakfast today I sliced and toasted a biscuit, put mayonnaise on one side and catsup on the other, added one fried egg and a slice of Spam Light, and washed it down with a cup of tomato juice. During the hard days of the Depression, kids would punch a hole in a biscuit and fill it with honey, let it crystallize, and eat it for a snack. Love your column. Blessings.”
Dunnellon’s Elvere “Tommy” Thompson wrote: “Your story about DB’s onion sandwich struck a tasty nerve today and I have to say that’s a gastro-delightful treat, which I have been eating for a long time. I call it the Tomwood and if you print the details, it will probably cause some to give up reading this column if not cancel their subscription. It starts with two slices of brown or rye bread coated with a light treatment of mayonnaise; add a liberal helping of peanut butter, sliced onions slabs, mustard to taste, a slice of sharp cheddar cheese and cover with sweet pickle relish. DB’s addition of the tomato has given me an added choice and I am going to try it on my next Tomwood creation.
“Now be mindful of the fact that my wife just recently hosted a wonderful 90th birthday surprise party for me – and my excellent health might be caused by this tasty concoction of my own design.
“I was a bit reluctant to describe this gastro-treat, but DB’s bravery in light of your resistance convinced me to ‘go public’ with my tasty creation. I enjoy your enlightening articles, Sly Guy.”
Dunnellon’s Tom Miller wrote: “About the only thing better than an onion sandwich is an onion and tomato sandwich. I guess it must be a Pennsylvania thing. A sandwich that is both tasty and good, for a change, is an onion and peanut butter one. Yum, I might just have to fix one when I get off the computer.
“Just another little note, Forest Park is a suburb of Atlanta. The mayor of Forest Park used to have a big tomato sandwich get-together once a year. I never made it, but heard there was always a large crowd.
“I gotta go now — the onion and peanut butter is beckoning. Happy eating.”
Lake Kerr’s Betty Halsey wrote: “I recommend a green pepper and butter sandwich on white bread. Now don’t rule this one out until you’ve tried it! Besides, you asked for odd or weird food preferences, so here is mine. It is even better on a slice of homemade bread.”
Ocala’s Barbara Talmage wrote: “I am a snowbird and look forward to reading your columns each winter we are in Ocala. I just had to respond to today’s article about DB’s sandwiches. She is right on! Tell her to try my specialty — mayo on one slice of bread, peanut butter on other slice and add a nice juicy beefsteak tomato in the middle smeared with more mayo … and if she truly likes her onion, she can add that, too. Works with rye bread as well as whole wheat, but I prefer the rye. Been eating them for over 40 years.”
Gerald O’Hearn, Dunnellon, wrote: “I love onion sandwiches, especially with sliced tomatoes. They are not only tasty, but nourishing as well. I grew up during the Great Depression. Times were lean, but we always had money for fresh vegetables, and believe me, onions were on our table daily. Love your column, keep up the good work and give DB a hug for me!”
So, dear reader (as writers used to say way back in the 19th century), I still haven’t exhausted the onion sandwich letters yet. I’ll include a few more in Thursday’s column.
Until then, have yourselves a most happy Valentine’s Day!
