Paella – Jamon Jamon: street market food the way we like it

Jamon Jamon

The smell of fragrant rosemary and the sound of sizzling prawns hits you long before you see the Jamon Jamon market stall. With two enormous paella pans on the go, and a third in the back readying the next batch of delicious Valencia paella, it’s no wonder this street market food stall is so popular at The Real Food Market and Portobello Road Market.

Pioneered by Capetonian Nick Friedman, Jamon Jamon is a labour of love that has grown out of a tiny market stall in Goldborne Road Market in London selling Spanish ham and cheese into a funky, food-fuelled market stall providing healthy, delicious meals to a hungry public. Moving to Portobello Road Market was like “Moving from Pofadder to the VA Waterfront,” Nick said, and he’s never looked back.

Jamon Jamon

There’s nothing more appetising than a generous helping of freshly-cooked paella and the Jamon Jamon team do it in style. Expect to find South African hospitality fused with traditional delicious Spanish cooking along with a generous side helping of fun. All their ingredients are organically-grown and sourced from sustainable resources like their halaal free-range chickens, and their succulent tiger prawns.

Their menu features the fabulous Valenciana (£5.50), a combination of halaal chicken and runner beans, and the ever-popular Seafood (£6.50) which mixes up tiger prawns, squid and NZ green-lip mussels. Each dish is infused with a traditional Spanish blend of locally-sourced vegetables and spices.

Jamon Jamon

Be sure to keep a special look-out for their signature Jamon Jamon fryella; their unique take on a traditional English breakfast with bacon, eggs, mushrooms, beans and potatoes fried up paella-style.

You can find Jamon Jamon at the Real Food Market in Southwark on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and at the bustling Portobello Road Market on Saturdays. Look out for their street market stall in the Eat St. collective markets (check out www.jamonjamon.co.uk for details) and find them at music festivals and events around the country.
