Chocolate Ale Continues to be a Crowd Pleaser

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The votes are in and it’s a thumb’s up for Boulevard Brewery’s Chocolate Ale! In fact, like last year, chocolate brew fans are having a hard time finding the beet.

The demand for the seasonal brew is stronger than ever. Boulevard says it produced twice as much Chocolate Ale as it did in 2011. Liquor retailers who spoke to FOX 4 on Tuesday said it’s still not enough. Some customers were disappointed after making a special trip to buy Boulevard’s Chocolate Ale on the first day of sales only to find it was sold out.

“I was a little surprised,” said Justin Butterfield, beer drinker. ” I figured if you sneak away on a lunch break to get it, you might luck out, but apparently not.”

At Gomer’s Liquors in Midtown, the store started a reservation list at the end of December to make sure its regular customers wouldn’t get shut out.

“I think they are still way short,” said Jack Probst with Gomer’s.  I think they realize that. They don’t know what the craze is going to be. And it’s surprised them both years now.”

So, many names are on the list Probst says the chocolate concoction should have it’s own theme song! Few of the people FOX 4 talked to on Tuesday had actually tasted it. The demand is being fueled by word-of-mouth.

“It only comes out once a year and I hear it is the best beer ever,” said Chris Jordan. “So, I wanted to try it.”

Dustin Kuhn paid $8 for a glass of Chocolate Ale on tap from a Liberty Tavern. And though he called the price steep, it didn’t stop him from trying to get his own bottle.

“It was actually very good,” Kuhn said.

Some of those lucky enough to reserve their own bottle say they plan to share it with family and friends. Some even say it will be a good drink to enjoy while watching the Super Bowl.

Retailers say Chocolate Ale sales are the strongest in Kansas City. They’d like to see Boulevard sell it exclusively instead of shipping some of the supply to cities like Springfield.
