Weird Cheese Sports
By Maryam Louise, Yahoo! Contributor NetworkDec 13, 1:07 pm EST
Just when you thought you had heard it all, you find out that cheese sports exist. Far beyond your typical cheese-eating contest, these weird sports are serious about fromage athleticism. While some are a gimmick for cheese producing regions of the world, others are simply unprovoked and bizarre.
Using cheese for sports injuries
If you think there is no place in sports for cheese, think again. Recently, Olympic winter sports star Lindsey Vonn made headlines with her strangeshin injury cure. In order to ensure a speedy recovery, Vonn slathered stinky cheese all over her wound. Of course, many found this technique odd. However, this is not such a strange thing to do. For example, at one time, placing a steak on a black eye was considered an effective folk remedy.
Despite this, there is plenty of history behind Vonn’s ideas. Considering she specifically used a curd cheese called topfen, it is obvious that Vonn may have gleaned this idea from the late 1800s naturopath Sebastian Kneipp. In his 1896 book “The Kneipp Cure” he refers to this old topfenkase remedy for treating inflammation.
Olympic style cheese curling
When it comes to being a professional cheese athlete, Illinois’ Amish Country takes it to the next level. On top of a slew of fermented milk related activities like the Rat Race, there is a focus on combining sports and cheese. In particular, the game of curling is modified for the Arthur Amish Country Cheese Festival.
While they keep the curling brooms, the 38 – 44 pound stone is replaced by a four pound round of cheese. If you think this is a goofy event for a local county fair, think again. According to the website the contest is, “sanctioned by the International Cheese Curling Association.”
Hills are for cheese rolling
Forget the Grilled Cheese Invitational altogether because you do not need it to be cheesy and sporty. In the U.K., the birthplace of Stilton and Gloucester cheese holds an annual cheese rolling contest. This gives locals the opportunity to win a large round portion of fromage. An injury prone sport, the cheese round is rolled down a slippery overgrown hill and everyone chases after it. In North America, cheese rolling is popular in Canada where contestants are required to wear bike helmets in order to reduce risks
Racing cheese with no cardio
If you love sports, but are able to move only a few muscles, consider cheese racing with friends. The idea is simple and best played at parties. To get started, heat up a grill that is outside in a ventilated area. Then grab several slices of pre-sliced cheese. With cheese in hand, get two opponents to throw their slices on the grill at the same time. The cheese that burns up first is the winner of the race. Although this seems like a silly fad, there is actually a website dedicated to the cheese racing cause.
Altogether, this athletic dairy product proves that championing a weird sport is as easy as starting a website.
