Anita Easy Vegetarian Recipes

Good vegetarian breakfast recipes are hard to come by – usually it’s a case of picking a few things from the main menu – the eggs and maybe the mushrooms, and making up some kind of breakfast on your plate, all the while hoping the things you’ve chosen have not been cooked in the same pans as the meat – you don’t want to offend the kind hosts, so you don’t ask!

How refreshing then, to find a guest house which specializes in providing great vegetarian breakfast menus! I came across the Claymore Vegetarian Guest house when I was trawling the net, looking for vegetarian places to eat in Edinburgh, and was pleasantly surprised by the breakfast choices!

The first thing that caught my eye was the great choices on this little menu board! It is simple and so appealing – I love the way it is presented – handwritten menus always look so homely, and they hold the promise of home cooked food to follow! Also I know how time consuming it can be to write such menu boards – it used to take me hours to get it right!

What about the food? What could be more appealing than beautiful free range eggs cooked any way you want them! Choose any combination of free range eggs – fried, scrambled, boiled, poached, French toast – I would be hard pushed to make up my mind!

Then there are the omelettes – plain, cheese, mushroom, tomato – again how do you choose?

Cathy’s vegetarian breakfast recipes don’t stop there though – you can also choose to try a “full Scottish breakfast”, consisting of Saute potatoes, mushrooms, tomato, beans, sweet onion, polenta, halloumi, potato scones, fried bread – a profusion of lovely vegetarian choices that will have your gastric juices flowing!
All of this is served with tea, coffee, herbals … and a smile!

I always think vegetarian food is at its best when you don’t even notice it is vegetarian – and John achieves this with grace and style!

John offers a great continental buffet style breakfast with fresh fruit, cereal, yoghurt, soya yoghurt, jams & marmalades with a wide choice of cheeses & baby tomatoes. He also offers lovely choices from the bakery as well as toast and fruit juice.

There’s everything you could want here, a refreshing start to the day with the kind of healthy food choices you would choose if you were at home!

Remember what I said about everything being cooked together in the same pan? Well John comments “Frying medium is extra virgin olive oil and each pan in the kitchen has only one function. Yes, that’s a lot of pans!”

He really understands the concerns people have when eating out, and clearly he is also on top of all the food allergies people suffer from these days, offering soya milk and yoghurt as alternatives to dairy.

Let’s hear what the visitors have said about The Claymore!

We spent a weekend celebrating our Silver wedding anniversary. Great communication with Cathy, after finding The Claymore Guest House via google, both with email and texting us before our journey. The bedroom was very comfortable with good en – suite facilities. The breakfast was a vegetarian dream offering fresh fruit, cereals and pastries and beautiful cooked breakfasts including halloumi, polenta, vine tomatoes, eggs etc. The service was excellent and Cathy offered helpful advice regarding festival venues etc. We would not hesitate to recommend this guest house and look forward to returning with the whole family in the near future. Well Done to all at The Claymore!Reviewed 27 October 2011

Breakfast was fairly early for two layabouts like us, but very worth getting up for. There is plenty of choice, with some great choices on the pick’n'mix menu like halloumi and sweet onions as well as your standard eggs, mushrooms, beans etc. We were provided with soya milk on request, a seemingly bottomless teapot of good hot tea, and plenty of fruit, bread, cereal, cheeses, yogurts etc.

With customer reviews like that, Cathy and John are right to be proud of their unique concept of an all vegetarian guest house – their vegetarian breakfast recipes are only a small but memorable part of the great hospitality on offer – if you are looking for a vegetarian- friendly place to stay in Edinburgh, the Claymore Vegetarian Guest house surely ticks all the boxes!
