Superdiners pick purest seafood in town

The Superdiners get seacentric and tell us what local restaurant, market or hoary retail spot has the best fresh-caught seafood.

Point Loma Seafoods (2805 Emerson St. 619-223-1109 or pointlomaseafoods.com). Their fresh fish market has me hooked. They also make a sea scallop sandwich that’s to dive for. — Charles Kaufman, baker, owner of Bread Cie Café (Twitter @BreadnCieBakery)

Catalina Offshore Products (5202 Lovelock St., Linda Vista. 619-297-9797 or catalinaop.com). Serving both commercial and residential San Diego, these folks always have quality fish. — Sara Hanson, fine wine specialist and blogger (thesarkuswineblog.com)

I’m way into the Oceanaire happy hour (400 J St. 619-858-2277 or theoceanaire.com). Local or Baja (which is pretty darn local) oysters for $1. The bar is beautiful, the bartenders are awesome, and the food is delicious. “But it’s a chain restaurant!” you might say. So what? It’s good. — Anthony Schmidt, bartender at Noble Experiment

Got to give props to Tommy Gomes at Catalina Offshore: great guy and very conscious about species and healthy fishing methods. Chad White over at Sea Rocket Bistro (3382 30th St., North Park. (619) 255-7049 or searocketbistro.com) is the chef doing great things with these products. I love his sardines, but I am a simple man and nothing pleases me more than fresh San Diego sea urchin gonads. — Ricardo Heredia, executive chef at Alchemy Restaurant

What he said: Sea Rocket Bistro. Try the Baja shrimp featuring the namesake ingredient, along with gnocchi, bacon, tomato jam and whole grain mustard. Seriously, chef Chad White could’ve stopped at shrimp and bacon, but he didn’t, and we’re all the better for that. — Gerald “Dex” Poindexter, publicist, avid diner (Twitter @SuperDinerDex)

El Pescador Fish Market (627 Pearl St. La Jolla. 858-456-2526 or elpescadorfishmarket.com). There are so many amazing seafood restaurants in San Diego, but there is nothing like the purity of going to a great fishmonger and finding fresh local seafood, whether you want to take it home and make it yourself or select a filet and have them grill it for you right there. Simplicity is best. A little pepper and lemon — perfection. — Bill Sysak, beverage supervisor at Stone Brewing World Bistro Gardens

Seafood, now you’re speaking my language! The BEST fresh seafood around is from Catalina Offshore Products. True, it’s not a restaurant and you’re not going there for a meal, but you can bring it home and DIY. Tommy Gomes can give you lots of ideas on what to do with your selection. One place that gets incredibly creative with fresh, local, sustainable seafood is Sea Rocket Bistro. Chef Chad White is über-creative with seafood. He just recently whipped up some uni ice cream that I can’t wait to try. Another great place with fresh seafood is, of course, Point Loma Seafoods. Squid sandwich, fish sandwich, crab sandwich, fish tacos…it’s hard to pick just one, but the squid is my usual go-to. — Dave Morgan, CPA, avid diner
