Argentinean Cabernet most popular wine in online boutique
The top-selling wine in the largest online cellar in the US this year was a $10 Cabernet Sauvignon from Argentina described as light and fruity, rich in cherry flavors.
Of the 13,000 bottles in Wine.com’s online boutique, the 2009 Tilia Cabernet Sauvignon was the most popular label on their Top 100 Wines list which keeps track of the best-selling labels throughout the year.
The $10 (€7.50) bottle is aged for six months in French and American oak barrels and is described as having ruby red tones with a nose of ripe red fruits, sweet spice and a touch of tobacco. According to the winemaker’s notes, red currant and cassis are layered with notes of cedar and espresso bean, while the finish is soft and sweet with finely grained tannins.
Sales may also have been strengthened by a strong review from Wine Spirits magazine, which gave the wine 91 points for being light and fruity with rich cherry flavors and good tannins.
The winery, meanwhile, is named after the Tilia or Linden tree native to Argentina’s wine country whose leaves are used in a calming herbal tea.
The Jaume Serra Cristalino Brut Cava — a sparking, dry white wine from Spain that retails for $8 (€6) which also got a rating of 91 points by the same publication — was the second most popular bottle purchased on wine.com, followed by the Chateau Ste. Michelle 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Crest 2009 Two Vines Cabernet Sauvignon and d’Arenberg 2008 Stump Jump Shiraz.
Meanwhile, Wine Spectator released its picks for the top 100 most exciting wines of the year as well and gave top honors to a California red, the Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2009.
