Fruit Show in Srinagar

Srinagar, Nov 4 (ANI): The horticulture department of Jammu and Kashmir organised a fruit show on Thursday, with an aim to spread awareness among orchardists about growing rare and profitable varieties of fruits.

More than 400 varieties of fruits were displayed at the show, including dry fruits, kiwis, hazelnuts, lemon and oranges.

The state Health, Horticulture and Floriculture Minister Sham Lal said he was happy with the progress made by his state.

“First of all, I would like to congratulate the traders and growers of Jammu and Kashmir because initially we feared that other states like Himachal Pradesh were progressing much more than us, but when we calculated our growth and worked at the micro-level, I feel that when we talk about our temperate horticulture, especially fresh fruit like apples and other varieties, then we hold a share of 70 percent,” said Lal.

The department has also introduced some new machinery used for horticultural activities, so as to make growers familiar with latest technology.

The state government brought in drip irrigation system worth 60 million to save water and improve the quality of fruit production.

The orchardists appreciated the efforts of the government, since these shows enabled them to learn latest techniques and earn profit.

“The fruit show that we have seen here has a variety of fruits on display. In fact, the fruits have been collected from various states and then displayed here. We have got this opportunity to see rare varieties of fruit. There are some fruit that we haven’t seen before and we want to grow it too, it would also prove to be profitable for us. We got to see a lot of things, even on the technical front,” said Manzoor Ahmed, an orchardist.

The state government has taken initiatives to construct wholesale markets for fruits as well as cold storage facilities, in a bid to promote horticulture industry in the state.

“We are definitely going to benefit. This show will spread awareness among growers and it is going to be very beneficial. They will try to improve the quality as well. There are already different varieties of fruit and a lot of new varieties have also come. In fact, the government has announced 90 percent subsidy for drip system,” said Gulam Rasool, an orchardist.

There was a technical session also held which was meant to give more information about growing of different varieties of fruits. (ANI)
