Gadgetwise Blog: App Smart Extra: Keeping Track of Coffee Orders

Last week’s App Smart column pointed out a few apps that help find specialty coffee shops when you’re in an unfamiliar area, but for a lot of people, a more pressing task is just completing a coffee run smoothly.

Both iPhones and Androids offer solid help in this respect, with apps that give you a checklist-based way to account for the coffee preferences of your friends and colleagues.

App Smart Extra

More from Bob Tedeschi, the App Smart columnist.

On iPhone, the free app CoffeeRunLE displays a list of typical java attributes and additives, so you can record someone’s order for a medium cappuccino with three sugars and low-fat milk, for instance.

For noncoffee drinkers, the app also includes tea, juice, drinks and doughnuts. The LE version lets you build a list with five items. For another $2, the full version, called CoffeeRun!, gets you an unlimited number of items.

Coffee Run, which is free on Android, was created by another developer, and I liked it better than its iPhone competitor. You can link a beverage to a particular person, unlike the others, and the app is prepopulated with beverage selections from Tim Horton’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, McDonald’s and Starbucks, so you can track someone’s request for a venti macchiato, for instance, in the proper vernacular.

What if your coffee run doesn’t point you in the direction of any of those establishments? No problem. Just pretend you’re buying from McDonald’s, where the coffee selections are basic enough to work just fine.
