Weigh to go: Research suggests it’s best to start a diet on a Tuesday
If you’re thinking of embarking on a diet, don’t do it today.
Tuesday is the worst day of the week to begin, a study claims.
Those who start on a Sunday or Monday are far more likely to shed the most weight.
Dieters who start on a Tuesday are the most likely to lose their resolve within a week – and end up heavier than when they started.
A spokesman for Tesco Diets, which commissioned the poll of women who have dieted in the past year, said: ‘Psychologically, dieters are more motivated to continue if they start afresh at the beginning of the week.’
Sunday dieters lost an average of 8lb over three weeks – and 88 per cent then kept that weight off.
The average woman goes on three diets a year, the survey found.
Most ditch their diet on a Friday after a stressful week at work.
The stats emerged in a study of 2,000 Brits who have been on a diet within the last year.
The spokeswoman for Tesco Diets, said: ‘Changing your eating habits can be a hard challenge whatever day of the week.
Salad days: Those who start their diets at the weekend are also fairly likely to persevere
‘With women struggling with their busy work-life balance, mental and physical preparation has never been more important.
‘Time
should be taken to draw up shopping lists and peruse the supermarket
shelves carefully to make sensible, informed choices without grabbing
the nearest tin.’
The study also found those who start
their diet on a Saturday have a clear goal in mind and are more likely
to see the dieting commitment through to the end to meet their
weight-loss targets.
And
the nation’s dieting pitfalls are lack of will power, boredom and
comfort eating, which are most likely to ‘break’ women into going back
to their unhealthy ways.
An unfortunate quarter admitted to putting on more weight during their diet than actually losing it – on average six pounds.
A spokeswoman for Tesco Diets added: ‘There are numerous barriers hindering women from controlling their weight – boredom is something Tesco Diets works hard to combat through convenient eating choices, tailored by experts to support even the most demanding of lifestyles.’
It also emerged the majority ditch their diet on a Friday after a stressful week at work.

Absolute rot!! If you are commited to something and are serious about it then it doesnt matter if you start it on a tuesday afternoon at 15:07 on a cold rainy day!

@ Sue in Horsham – Well you’re quite wrong as if you had to have many diets, it means they weren’t THAT successful! The success is not only measured by how much you’ve lost but mostly by whether you can keep it off!! Something most women don’t seem to understand somehow… As for the article, I don’t think it matters what day you start, what matters is your will power and what sort of diet you are doing… If you are starving yourself and depriving yourself from everything you like, then whether you start on a Monday or Tuesday is irrelevant…

Well I start a diet everyday so I’m expecting it to be super successful at some point!

Monday is the WORST day to start, because its Monday. Back to work, first day of the week, probably feeling a bit tired. Mentally, its a bad day to start something like that because its, frankly, depressing that the weekend is over, a new week has started, and now you’ve got to start eating better. I say use Monday as a day to eat what you want and start on Tuesday. Only 4 days till the weekend and all that. And who starts a diet on a Sunday???? That’s the wierdest observation this article makes. If anything,Tuesday is a perfect day for this!

Hows about not dieting and just eating a healthy diet along side an active life, it works for me.

All of my most successful diets start on a Tuesday (and I have lost several stones, several times!)…
Monday is just too bad a day to begin, weekend no good, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday to close to another weekend.
tuesday is the perfect day!
