Salerno’s serves up Italian food with flair and flavour

Salerno’s in Lexington offers foods that appeal to a wide range of tastes with definite Italian flair and flavor. There is on-street parking, plus a large parking lot across the street.

When you enter the main doors the menu is listed on huge boards above the counter where you order. Specials and the soup du jour are listed on the large blackboard along with a trivia question, a little food for thought to start your meal.

Up the stairs to the left is the door to the patio area and to the right is another dining area with a buffet table. Just $8.99 gets you all-you-can-eat pizza, salad, meatballs and more.

Children ages 10 and younger eat at the buffet for $5 and ages 4 and younger are free.

After you order and get your table number, pick a seat and it’s just a short wait until your meal is brought to you.

It’s fun to watch the crew put the orders together because everyone knows this mega menu and each item is made with precision and pride.

Salads start at $5.99 and two soups were available. Cups are $3.29 and bowls are $4.29. I ordered the pasta fagioli. This soup had an even blend of beans and pasta in light tomato-based broth with bits of celery and onion. I couldn’t help but dip in my bread slices. Tasty to the last spoonful.

Pizzas are offered in 14- or 16-inch sizes, and calzones come either small or large.

Specialty pizza slices are $4.50 each or $18.99 for the whole pie.

Baked pasta dishes such as shells, ziti or manicotti are priced from $10.99 and include salad and bread.

Children ages 10 and younger who aren’t pizza-eaters have other choices, such as hot dogs or chicken tenders.

Now we get to the subs.

They have 20 sub combinations, which come in either 9-inch ($7.99) or 18-inch ($12.99) sizes and are served cold or hot.

I ordered the No. 17, which is pastrami, grilled onions, American cheese and brown mustard. The menu suggests that the 9-inch can serve one to two and the 18-inch can serve two to four. This is accurate — these subs are packed.

I also ordered a cold sub to go and wasn’t disappointed when I got it home.

The No. 2 is the Italian with capicola, prosciuttini, cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. This sub was mostly meat and cheese and not all lettuce. I did get to taste the chicken parm and loved the tender breaded chicken that was covered in Salerno’s sauce and melted cheese.

Vegetarian offerings also are available.

It was good to see that after their first review two years ago that Salerno’s Family Restaurant has maintained its high-quality foods and congenial staff.
