Making Chocolate Cake

Basic cake recipes – Chocolate Cake

Ingredients:
200g (7oz) plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons cocoa
150g (5oz) soft brown sugar
2 tablespoons golden syrup
2 eggs
150ml (1/4 pint) oil
150ml (1/4 pint) milk
Chocolate Icing

175g (6 oz) plain chocolate
2 tablespoons single cream
To decorate:

Walnut halves
icing sugar
Preparation

Sift the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl and make a well in the center. Add the syrup, eggs, oil and milk and beat thoroughly until smooth. Pour into a lined and greased 23cm (9inch) cake tin and bake in a preheated moderate oven, 160c (325f) for 45 to 50 minutes. Leave in the tin for a few minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool. To make the icing, place the chocolate and cream in a small pan and heat gently until melted. Cool slightly, then pour over the cake. Dredge the walnuts with the icing sugar and arrange around the top of the cake.
