CBS staff and Y!Philly reports
For some, Memorial Day not only the official start to summer, but the unofficial start of outdoor barbecue season. So it stands to reason that the month of May is National Barbecue Month (and National Burger Month, too, by the way).
And though Philly will soon be blanketed in the scent of charcoal and mesquite from backyards, balconies and picnic areas everywhere, Philly has a respectable reputation for serving good barbecue. Anything from saucy pulled pork, to St. Louis-style ribs, to Texas brisket, to sweet and tangy chicken — plus all the fixins — can be found in and around the city.
The good folks at uwishunu give a rundown of some of their favorites for those who like to leave the grillmastering to others. Top picks include the Texas-style grub at South Street’s Percy Street Barbecue and the eclectic Smokin’ Betty’s in Center City, where St. Louis ribs sit alongside Carolina-inspired cole slaw, and brisket is paired with potato latkes. Then there’s West Philly’s Le Cochon Noir, where you can get your ribs and chops with a side of live music, and perennial favorite Phoebe’s Bar-B-Q, which specializes in Oklahoma barbecue by the pound, and has branched out from its South Street location to an outpost in Roxborough.
The blog hits most areas of Philly in mentioning other good bets for barbecue, including Germantown favorite, Fergie’s Pub; Sweet Lucy’s Smokehouse in the Northeast, and Pig Daddy’s BBQ in Drexel Hill.
