Fans sit in Comerica Park during a rain delay prior to the Tigers’ baseball game against the Toronto Blue Jays in Detroit on May 17.
DETROIT — Nothin’ says baseball quite like a traditional Ballpark Frank veggie wrap and an ice cold beer fruit smoothie.
According to an annual ranking by animal rights group PETA, Comerica Park was named the third-most vegetarian-friendly ballpark in major league baseball. It’s the highest ranking the organization has received since PETA started announcing the rankings in 2002.
“With flamethrower Justin Verlander on the mound and flame-broiled veggie Italian sausage on the grill, Comerica Park is the place to be this summer,” PETA Associate Director Chris Holbein said. “With so many health-friendly vegetarian dishes to choose from, eating smart while cheering on the Tigers has never been easier.”
Comerica Park offers a wide variety of vegetarian options to complement its time-honored Little Caesar’s pizza, including veggie dogs, black-bean burgers, vegetable stir-fry and meatless taco salads. Several concession stands offer corn on the cob, hummus plates and veggie fried rice, too.
After four consecutive years atop the rankings, Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park fell to second after San Francisco’s ATT Park was tabbed No. 1, to go along with the club’s World Series title.
Also in the top 10 were Turner Field (Atlanta Braves), Coors Field (Colorado Rockies), Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum (Oakland Athletics), PETCO Park (San Diego Padres), Angel Stadium (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), Minute Maid Park (Houston Astros) and Miller Park (Milwaukee Brewers).
